Status: On-going

Independent Development Evaluation (IDEV) at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB or the “Bank”) has launched an evaluation on supporting agriculture and agribusiness growth and productivity in Africa.

This evaluation synthesis aims to help the Bank overcome the strategic, conceptual and implementation challenges of agriculture and agribusiness growth and productivity interventions in its regional member countries. It also aims to draw lessons and formative recommendations to guide the Bank and other stakeholders in the implementation of  “Feed Africa: Strategy for Africa’s Agricultural Transformation, 2016-2025” and ongoing flagship programs including the African Food Crisis Response Emergency Facility (AFCREF) and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ).

This synthesis will be informed by several evaluations carried out by IDEV over the past ten years (2012 – 2022) in the field of agriculture and the agro-industry in Africa. It will review the main evaluation criteria such as the relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, coherence and sustainability of interventions focusing on the first two enablers of the Feed Africa strategy, namely: i) increase productivity, and ii) Realize the value of increased production. It will analyze and consolidate data on agriculture and agribusiness growth and productivity from existing evaluation reports of the Bank, sister institutions, bilateral development agencies, think tanks, and academic research centers.
The evaluation is expected to be completed in Q3 2023.
